Spiderphone

The Optical Refuse Network, commonly called the Spiderphone is a decentralized pirate communications network used throughout the exurbs, wastelands, and surveillance blind spots of the world. Unlike conventional communications infrastructure, which is heavily regulated, monitored, and prohibitively expensive, the Spiderphone relies upon disposable optical fibre deployed by autonomous drones.

The sprawling mesh of fiber-optic cables that underpins the Society’s communication network is a direct inheritance from a previous civil war fought largely by autonomous drones. During that conflict, vast communication grids were laid across the landscape to facilitate real-time drone coordination and sensory feedback. When the war ended and the empires involved collapsed or retreated, these sophisticated networks were abandoned, left to decay into a tangled mess of discarded cable and forgotten relays.

The Dead Drop Society recognized the latent potential in this “garbage.” By scavenging the remnants of these dead fibres, they were able to stitch together a resilient, low-bandwidth communication web. This repurposing of military-grade wreckage allowed communities, dissidents and the Society to establish its current network without the need for new infrastructure, effectively turning the discarded tools of high-tech warfare into the foundation of a grassroots, resistant information ecosystem.

The network developed into a mesh communications technology among data couriers and Dead Drop Society operatives. Over time, abandoned fibre lines accumulated across abandoned suburbs, industrial corridors, and exclusion zones until vast regions became draped in tangled cables resembling enormous Spiderphones visible from the air.

The Spiderphone is primarily used for:

The Cyberflation Era

Following the Cyberflation Crisis, access to mainstream communications infrastructure became increasingly restricted and expensive. Subscription fees, authentication requirements, and behavioral monitoring effectively locked much of the population out of free communication.

In response, underground groups sought alternatives.

The earliest Optical systems were deployed by courier drones carrying spools of ultra-thin optical fibre. During transmission windows, drones would rapidly create temporary point-to-point links between locations, transmitting encrypted data bursts before abandoning the line.

The method became known as:

“Casting Silk.”

Originally intended as a one-time communication technique, millions of kilometres of abandoned fibre gradually accumulated throughout the exurbs.


Architecture

The Spiderphone is not a single network.

Instead it consists of countless independent fibre strands stitched together by users.

A typical link consists of:

  4. Local power source

Users frequently salvage discarded optical lines and reconnect them into local communication meshes.

No central authority controls the Spiderphone.

Because voice requires very little bandwidth compared to immersive mindjection traffic, even degraded fibre lines can often carry conversations.

Improvised telephones are common throughout poorer exurbs.

“Pulling a Thread.”

These drones deploy hair-thin optical fibres over great distances.
