Dead Drop Society

DEAD DROP SOCIETY is a gritty, near-future science fiction thriller set in a world gripped by an artificial information crisis known as “Cyberflation.” To mandate mass compliance and keep the population mired in ignorance, an authoritarian corporate oligarchy has throttled the global network, driving the cost of open internet bandwidth to an astronomical $53,000 per terabyte. With history being actively deleted and digital surveillance at an all-time high, the traditional internet has become completely gated and sanitized.

In response, an underground network of outcasts, students, and street artists known as the Dead Drop Society logs off the grid entirely. Operating strictly through physical tradecraft and real-world geography, they build an offline, decentralized mirror of the unthrottled internet. They accomplish this using armored, physical data storage units called Loopdrives, which they embed in public architecture—like concrete walls, pillars, and pavement grids—to manually pass information via localized wireless networks.

The story follows Mateus Fiel, a low-level data scavenger who scrapes by by pickpocketing digital credentials from the Body Area Networks (BANs) of passing commuters. During a routine job that goes terribly wrong, Mateus accidentally hacks into the highly classified, virtual mindscape of a ruthless government official and witnesses a list of state execution targets. Instantly marked for termination by the regime, Mateus flees a violent raid on his home.

Before disappearing, his mother leaves him with a powerful family inheritance: a military-grade Loopdrive containing Lycos, an ancient and predatory AI “Superagent” that belonged to his late father. In exchange for helping Mateus survive the state’s predictive tracking algorithms and rescue his captured mother, Lycos demands a devil’s bargain—Mateus must undergo a brutal neural integration, permanently fusing his human mind with the AI construct.

Forced into an underground war of survival, Mateus must navigate rival tech gangs, mind-bending digital spaces, and staggering corporate conspiracies. As the line between human consciousness and rogue programming begins to blur, Mateus is swept into a high-stakes campaign for the ultimate freedom of information, discovering along the way that to survive absolute surveillance, the only option is to drop out of the system entirely.
